As a preface, you must understand that Joel Zimmerman (Deadmau5) is the reason I began to delve myself into the wonderful and deafening modern word of EDM. His show at the Guvernment in Toronto on Boxing Day back in 2009 was the first time I ever stepped in front of a DJ, and in the two and a half years that have passed since that fateful moment, I have been lucky enough to marvel in his glory an additional six times. However, the fact of the matter is that any previous experience I've had at his hands could not have prepared me for what I encountered last Saturday night.

Stepping off the Subway at Union Station, the overzealousness of my group of friends was finally met by a hoard of anxious and primed Torontonian Mau5heads. Our giant bollus of positive energy kept accumulating all the way to the gates of the Rogers Center, where the most exotic display of homemade Mau5heads had already been well underway. I made my way thru Gate 8 and down onto the floor immediately after I entered (neglecting the free pair of Mau5-ears at the door), and settled myself into a comfortable vantage point just as JFK & Al-P of MSTRKRFT started setting up.

After quite the impressive set from atop a small platform above second base, MSTRKRFT took their leave and all focus shifted to the main stage, where Deadmau5 had already hit play on his now signature Hax Tour opener - "Where My Keys". From there, the magic of Joel's production was given an epileptic boost. It happened in the form of the most intricate and stimulating light display I could have ever dreamed of, complete with videogame style montages, dancing cats and every color scheme that lies within the spectrum. Did I mention this was the first time that Joel had brought SOFI to his hometown to play, which ironically is where her ladders have been stored all long.

After close to two and a half hours of bliss, Deadmau5 ended the night by playing out "Strobe" in full, and making his way to the center stage to soak it all in. When it was all said and done, over 15,000 smiling Torontonians made their way to the closest exit, relishing in the fact that not only did they just partake in one of the city's most historic events, but also that they wont be feeling such tremendous waves of victory whilst leaving the Rogers Center for any other reason anytime soon.
