Metal and electro collided in Hollywood this week when Korn and crew of DJs staged an auditory assault on a rowdy crowd of intergenerational headbangers.

Korn’s tenth and most recent LP The Path of Totality sees the group (who have been around for nearly twenty years now), experimenting with dub, via production by a crew of DJ/producers including Skrillex, Datsik, Excision, 12th Planet and Downlink, all of whom made appearances at the packed Hollywood Palladium Tuesday night. Downlink, Datsik and Excision opened the show with aggressive dub sets that appealed, (at least by the look of the dancing), to the thrash-friendly crowd. 12th Planet supported Korn on the decks for “Way to Far” and Skrillex himself showed up, with guitar and sans glasses, during “Narcissistic Cannibal.” Korn and their guests then engaged in an onstage group hug. Really, they did.

“We just took it [heavy electronic music] to the next level.” Korn frontman Jonathan Davis told Elektro recently. “At the end of the day, we make music that we want to make. I mix electro and bass music. My favorites are electrohead, heavy dubstep and drumstep.”

Last night’s show made it clear that the band is introducing the genre to young and old metal fans alike. And with this obviously crowd-pleasing electro evolution, the guy in the crowd who was heard yelling “best Korn show since Lollapalooza ‘94” over and over, may have just been right.
