Raving Raeanne: Fashion Interview with LA Riots
If you’ve ever seen Daniel Linton, aka LA Riots, live you’d know that his music is only rivaled by his impeccable fashion sense. Whether sporting black jeans and a black faded t-shirt, or a simply dapper blazer, Linton certainly knows how to dress the part of a rock star DJ. As co-owner of the killer street wear line “We Are Massiv.,” fashion is much more than a simple hobby for Linton. As one of the most well dressed producers out there, I thought it was appropriate to get Linton’s take on fashion, personal style, and life on the road. Check out what he has to say below!
How would you describe your style?
DL: I wear a lot of basics - lots of black. A lot of high-end designers, t-shirts and jeans pretty much describe my uniform.
From where do you draw your fashion inspiration?
DL: Basic street style. I find most of my inspiration in the way clothes fit and how people wear them. Just piecing things together. I travel a lot so I get to see different styles from all over the world. I people watch a lot.
Some favorite designers?
DL: Hedi Slimane (Saint Laurent), Hiroki Nakamura (Visvim), Alexander Wang (Alexander Wang, Balenciaga), Kris van Assche (Dior).
Where is your favorite place to shop?
DL: This is a tie between Barney's New York and Opening Ceremony. I can pretty much find everything I need between those two places. I wear stuff from designers people probably wouldn’t even think I would be interested in (Thom Browne, Band of Outsiders, Moncler). So Barneys is a good place for that sort of stuff as well as Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and Dior. I hit up Opening Ceremony when I want Alexander Wang, Acne, Isaora (I snowboard a lot and this brand has amazing jackets that look good on or off the mountain) and they carry Common Projects (shoe line from Italy).
Your favorite item in your closet?
DL: Saint Laurent black zip up hoodie by Hedi Slimane. The fit is amazing.
Your favorite pair of shoes?
DL: I'm always wearing a pair of brown wingtips. I wear black most of the time so I tend to avoid wearing black shoes. As far as tennis shoes if I’m in jeans I’m wearing Nike Fly knit trainers.
How do you pack when you’re on tour? What are some of your necessities?
DL: I will usually pack a couple black t-shirts. Since I always wear black jeans I like to wear faded black t-shirts to create a bit of a disconnect, an extra pair of jeans (Acne or Balenciaga), flip flops and swim trunks in case there is a beach nearby. Isaora and Acne make great trunks that I tend to wear more off the beach than on, and a couple jackets, usually denim and leather.
Do you have any fashion idols?
DL: Lately I’ve been identifying more with the way some of the more fashionable hip hop artists out there are dressing…and I don’t mean the guys rapping about every luxury brand under the sun just for the sake of making themselves look good when really they have no clue. They know the big brands.. Gucci, Versace, Prada etc. I really like the way Kanye, Cudi, A$AP, Big Sean and people like that have been dressing lately. Those guys are pushing brands like Surface 2 Air, Balenciaga, Rick Owens, Balmain, and really wearing it well.
Is the fashion world something you considered in the past or would like to get into in the future?
DL: I am one of the owners of a new street wear line called “We Are Massiv.” with my good friend Nathan Amar and Caspa (the dubstep producer). Right now it's t-shirts, hats, hoodies etc. But, we plan on expanding upon the basics and offering cut and sew pieces.
