Interview with Chris Malinchak

What made you want to start producing music?

Chris: There really wasn't a particular moment...always thought about sound, about music, writing and playing..it's always been there. I would do it even if nobody were listening.

How did growing up in the urban environment of Brooklyn influence your music?

Chris: Any of the boroughs, jersey, philly, this whole area has such an energy...a history. The kinds of records I find when I track down a collection someone wants to part with... crazy. This along with classical and jazz piano, playing other instruments...

Your skills with the piano and synths can be heard in your productions; tell me a bit about how those skills manifested and how they have affected your music-making process?

Chris: They are connected of course, but in some ways not at all. ideas and feelings flow on their own accord..they exist in their place and generally make themselves known when there is no piano in sight. But when it's time to put it down, I just do...no hesitation; it sounds precisely as it should. The instrument allows the idea to be shared.

What has been your reaction to the critical acclaim that "So Good To Me" and "If U Got It" have received as Pete Tong Essentials?

Chris: Happy :)

What was your experience like performing for BBC Radio 1 Weekend in Ibiza?

Chris: Intense...the love was overwhelming. The moment it was over, I just wandered away from the event to a deserted beach and watched the lights play out past the horizon. I was excited to share a version of "So Good To Me" that I had prepared just for that show.

How did the signing with RCA/Ultra come about?

Chris: Shortly after putting up "So Good To Me" with french express Pete Tong played it.. as more and more DJs at Radio 1 began playing it, a sense of genuine love grew around it, there was an excitement! It was surreal. Emails from everywhere began to come through, from labels, from managers, publishers...finally started meeting with people I felt good about, struck a deal with Sony UK, and suddenly found myself hanging with guys named Gatfield, Edge, Moxey, and Shabs.

What are you excited about for the future?

Chris: Everything...the music I still have to share.
