Every year the Red Bull Music Academy sets up shop in a different major city and invites musicians from all over the world to partake in exclusive studio sessions and tutorials curated by leading members in the industry. Tokyo was home to the Academy in 2014 and the tutors were joined by a variety of studio mentors that included Dorian Concept, Om’Mas Keith, Carl Craig, Mathew Jonson, and dBridge. In the Shibuya HQ, one floor was dedicated to eight custom-built studios and an equipment library with ceiling-high stacks of synths, keyboards, instruments, drum machines and other circuitry madness.

The Various Assets - Not For Sale: Red Bull Music Academy Tokyo 2014 mixtape is available for free download and features tracks produced by attendees with some featuring the mentors who decided to get in on the action. Accumulating nearly three hours of original music, Various Assets – Not For Sale is not just a series of tracks but a representation of what the Red Bull Music Academy is about: expressing your own original ideas, and leaping into the unknown. Freedom of expression is key and it shows in the diverse range of music presented in the compilation.
