Social media applications are a dime a dozen, with a majority of aspiring start-ups flaming out or being lost amidst the myriad other offerings out there. One of the up-and-coming applications is plug.dj, a real-time application launched in February that merges video and audio – access to live events, comedy sketches, movies, etc. The app runs off YouTube and Soundcloud, and as a result, is available to international users, wherever those services are accessible.

Similar to Turntable.fm, plug.dj allows users to enter virtual music rooms (or create a custom one) with a focal DJ avatar (representing the DJ) and each listener with their own avatar and a custom dance (akin to the ‘Like’ fuction). Users can also connect with YouTube or Soundcloud. Branded rooms are an interesting feature, serving as a hopeful source of monetization via sponsors, specialized rooms, promoted DJs, etc.
