MOCAtv DEBUTS “SAMO” A COLLABORATION BETWEEN FILMMAKER AARON ROSE AND DJ DUO N.A.S.A. FEATURING KOOL KOJAK AND FAB FIVE FREDDY
Last month, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles partnered up with Youtube to bring us MOCAtv, a virtual TV channel aimed at featuring artists involved with the museum, media from YouTube, and most recently, a new artist lyric video series. To kick off the series, filmmaker Aaron Rose has combined special visuals with “SAMO,” an original track by electronic duo N.A.S.A. The track, which features Fab Five Freddy and Kool Kojak, takes its name from a graffiti tag which appeared between the years 1977 and 1980 on the streets of downtown Manhattan. Taken from a conversation about marijuana between the two original graffiti artists, Jean Michel-Basquiat and Al Diaz, the acronym ‘SAMO’ (“the same old shit”) marked one of the first instances tag art was used as a form of social commentary. Download the track today via iTunes, and look out for the video on MOCAtv.
