You attended the School For Audio Engineering in the Netherlands…tell us a little bit about your experience there?

Thomas: To me it was a bridge between being creative and the technical side of making music. I’ve learned a lot, like mixing and mastering on another level.
It’s kind of funny to know that my old school uses my track “Wolken “ as a master/mixing example.”

Why did your family move from Mexico City to Amsterdam? That seems like a big jump.

Thomas: At a certain point my mom and dad split up and my mom decided to go back to Holland.

What’s one thing you got from living in the Netherlands that you don’t think you could’ve acquired anywhere else in the world?

Thomas: The large blend of different cultures in just one country. Those cultures bring several music genres together and you can hear that in my mixes. I go from Surinam tracks, back to tracks with Moroccan influences, to Latino tracks, Dutch tracks…you name it.

You experimented a lot with Hip Hop, namely during your time with Flinke Namen. Is Hip Hop big in the Netherlands?

Thomas: Yes it is. It is quit a large scene.

Hip Hop seems to be re-emerging through trap.

Thomas: Yes in a way, but that’s the case with a lot of music. All musical sounds inspire and are, in a way, influential to each other..

What was the impetus behind the first Yours Truly mixtapes?

Thomas: It is a compilation of tracks that are not necessarily played everywhere. Because of my mixtapes, I introduce old or uncommon tracks to a larger audience.
It’s not only a tape to listen to in the club; it’s also very nice to listen at home or in your car.

How does the Amsterdam Dance Event stack up to other festivals you’ve attended around the world?

Thomas: ADE is more like a conference. You have these big locations where everybody meets each other from the industry to do business. That is during the day and there are a lot of club events at night. There is not one big festival, like, for example, Ultra during Miami Music Week. Playing in Amsterdam is a home-match.

Loved your remix of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious.” Do you have more fun remixing tracks or creating your own?

Thomas: I like both but remixing a track is easier because the outlines are there already.

If the world was ending and you had one last gig, what tracks would we hear in your set?

Thomas: “Wolken” - Flinke Namen, because of the beat and the vibe. I always love to hear that track back.

Favorite venue to DJ at, and favorite venue to party at?

Thomas: Paradiso, Amsterdam. Holy Ship seems like a good party spot to me…

When you go out for fun, do you ever find yourself over-analyzing the music, or thinking of different ways you would play instead?

Thomas: All the time…sometimes I wish I could just switch that button off.

What was the best advice you’ve gotten along the journey of your musical career?

Thomas: Keep on practicing, you’re never there.

Which artist would you most love to play b2b with?

Thomas: I always had the wish to play b2b with Diplo and that recently happened at my own party so that’s really cool.

Weirdest thing a fan ever said to you/asked you?

Thomas: Pick one of the 60 girls that all want to come to your hotel…

Track that holds the most meaning to you, it can be yours or someone else’s.

Thomas: Juan Gabriel – “Hasta Que Te Conoci” (25 min live version at El Palacio de Bellas Artes). Brings back a lot of memories of when I was still living in Mexico.

What have been some turning points for you throughout your career?

Thomas: The moment I started with Yours Truly, my own event. I used to be very shy and I never really looked at the crowd. I was so caught up in my DJ sets. Yours Truly is an event that started for just my friends. Eventually it got bigger and bigger and I started to feel really comfortable with a crowd. That was definitely a turning point for my career

What was the worst night you had performing? Best?

Thomas: The worst was during my first set in Rotterdam, I was very young and inexperienced and had to play to a club of 5000 people. I wasn’t ready at all. Best experience, Yours Truly Paradiso, first time we sold it out on my own name.

Taken or single?
Thomas: Very much taken by my career.

Big-room club or intimate venue?
Thomas: Intimate club

Upcoming projects/releases/gigs?
Thomas: I’m working on a new track with Sef that is gonna be out there before summer.
