Electric Beach at Playhouse Nightclub with Swanky Tunes Recap

It was everything one expects from a Hollywood nightclub: ridiculously beautiful women clad in nothing more than black lingerie gyrating in all corners of a darkened room, ever-popping champagne bottles, confetti intermittently falling from the ceiling and a dance floor tightly packed with dressed to impress party people hanging on every note emanating from the massive sound system. This was the scene in Hollywood’s Playhouse on Friday night. At the helm of was Russian DJ duo Swanky Tunes, who hit the Hollywood Boulevard venue as headliners of Electric Beach presented by our friends from Corona Light.

Taking the stage just after midnight, the group expertly elevated the energy of the room with a non-stop set that exemplified why ‘Swanky Tunes’ were buzz words at Miami Music Week and why the group has garnered support from the likes of Tiësto, David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Laidback Luke, Dirty South, and Avicii. The set fused elements of hard-edged techno with overtones of progressive house and electro-80s for a sound that almost instantly set every body in the intimately sized Playhouse into motion.

Swanky Tunes’ larger than life sound played hard in the 120-150 BPM range as the duo sampled everyone from Fedde le Grand, Dada Life and Swedish House Mafia to pop favorites Miike Snow and Adele. “Coming Home,” Swanky Tunes’ own collaboration with Hard Rock Sofa (which was premiered by SHM this past April at Coachella and will be released via Axtone on July 9), was an especially powerful addition to the nonstop set. The room went especially wild for SHM’s “In My Mind” and the Tommy Trash remix of “Antidote” as well as “Sending My Love,” Swanky Tunes’ collaboration with Hard Rock Sofa and R3hab.

Both the DJs and the crowd sang along with equal enthusiasm as the group’s signature “electric chainsaw” sound blasted through the club in the manner of a pleasantly overwhelming auditory assault. From the pit to the balcony to the VIP-laden bottle service booths, it was impossible not to dance.

Swanky Tunes, who are at the forefront of the Russian electronic scene after 15 years together, seemed to be having as much fun as the writing mass on the dance floor as they pumped their fists and stood on the decks (where there was not a laptop in sight) for a better view of the crowd that they were so expertly controlling with the drops, rises and reoccurring signature sample effect that sounded similar to the horn of a Mack truck.

As confetti dropped from the ceiling and beams of lights illuminated the fake smoke swirling through the dance floor, the crowd’s energy rose with along with the relentless beats as Swanky Tunes took the room ever-higher with two hours of peaks, drops and body rattling bass. No doubt that ears ringing well into the early hours of Sunday morning were happy reminders of a night well spent in Hollywood.
