As the 13th year of Coachella draws to a close, 2012 will be remembered for not only Tupac's surprise appearance, but as a huge step forward for electronic dance music in the United States. Progressive house trio, Swedish House Mafia, made history this year by being the first electronic act to headline the festival's main stage.

"This is the pinnacle of what our type of music can do," said SHM's Axwell, before dropping a massive set on Friday. Coachella is known for its cutting edge lineup and has consistently proven itself to be the music festival for top up-and-coming artists. With the prominence of EDM artists that dominated the lineup this year (Afrojack, Madeon, Kaskade, Avicii, Calvin Harris, Nero, Dada Life, and Porter Robinson, just to name a few), the future for the genre seems to be getting bigger and bigger and exploding in many new and exciting directions.
